Sponge Iron Price in India

Sponge iron is a metallic product made by reducing iron ore in the solid state directly. It’s a scrap substitute that’s primarily used in the secondary steelmaking process. The goal of the sponge iron manufacturing process is to eliminate oxygen from iron ore. The percentage of metallization (removal of oxygen), which is the ratio of metallic iron to total iron in the product, is used to determine the quality of sponge iron.

The qualities of the raw materials used to make sponge iron are quite important.

As a result, it’s critical to look at the chemical and physical properties of raw materials separately and in combination. Iron ore, non-coking coal, and dolomite are the primary raw materials used to make sponge iron. Raw material sizing is also important in the sponge iron manufacturing process. The needed size of Iron ore, MPS (Mean particle size), as well as its physical and chemical parameters, such as T.I., A.I., and Fe (T), LOI, and gangue content. Two types of coal are utilised in the sponge iron process: feed coal and injection coal.

Specifications for Products

WPSL has four rotary kilns, each capable of producing 100 tonnes per day (TPD). There will be a total capacity of 1,30,000 TPA. We use a portion of the sponge iron to make steel, and the balance is sold to other steel producers. Sponge iron producers want a 30% tariff on pellet exports. Manufacturers of sponge iron have written to the Prime Minister’s Office, asking for a ban on the export of iron ore pellets or a 30% tariff.

We demand a 30 percent export duty on iron ore pellets to ensure normalcy in production for secondary steel companies,” the Chhattisgarh Sponge Iron Manufacturers’ Association wrote in the letter. Sponge iron is made from iron ore pellets or lumps. Iron ore fines, scrap, or sponge iron are used to make steel. The export of iron ore fines is discouraged, and the group believes that a similar regulation should be implemented for iron ore pellets. With a 30% export duty on iron ore fines, large steel companies are expected to be able to purchase it at a reasonable price. However, iron ore pellets have no export duty, and we can’t get it at a decent price,” said one of the sponge iron manufacturers.
